Abbey alum Juan Maegli '07 continues to distinguish himself as a world-class sailor, winning a gold medal on July 18 at the 2015 Pan American Games, being held in Toronto. Maegli represented his home country of Guatemala in his winning effort, besting seven other international competitors in the eight-boat Laser fleet after 13 races. His first-place finish qualifies him for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

This is Juan's third medal performance in the Pan American Games. He earned a gold sailing in the Hobie 16 class, at the 2007 Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, and a bronze at the 2011 Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the Laser class. Juan's long list of sailing accomplishments include his participation, in the Laser class, in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Summer Olympics, for which he was chosen Guatemala's flag-bearer during the opening ceremony; a fourth-place finish at the 2012 Laser World Championship, held in Boltenhagen, Germany; and his selection as an All-American in 2010 and College Sailor of the Year in 2013, both honors he earned while at College of Charleston.

Congratulations, Juan!
