Scholarships

Diman Scholarship

The Reverend Hugh Diman Scholarship has been established to honor the founder and first headmaster of the School. The prestigious merit-based grant is awarded each year to one boarding student entering Form III (grade 9). The recipient receives a full scholarship equaling the annual tuition, room, and board that will be renewed each year of the student's career at Portsmouth, subject to a satisfactory assessment by the Merit Scholarship Committee.

Abbey Scholarships
Boarding and Day candidates in all Forms are eligible to be selected as Abbey Scholars. As many as 10 highly qualified students each year will be awarded Abbey Scholarships. Scholarships for boarding students are awarded in the range of $3,500 to $12,000. Day students range from $2,500 to $8,000 scholarships. Abbey Scholars are not precluded from obtaining additional financial assistance should the family qualify for financial aid.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- For the Diman Scholarship, SSAT test scores must be in the 90th percentile or above; for Abbey Scholarships, test scores must be in the 80th percentile or above.
- Outstanding academic achievement, as demonstrated through current school transcripts and teacher recommendations.
- Enthusiastic endorsement from the candidate's Headmaster, Principal, or Guidance Counselor.

Merit Scholarship Selection

Diman Scholarship finalists and Abbey Scholars are selected on the basis of their application materials by the Admissions Committee. The Diman Scholarship finalists will be invited to visit the campus during a weekend in February to meet with faculty, staff and students. While on campus, each finalist will be required to write an essay and be interviewed by members of the Diman Scholarship Committee.

Students who wish to be considered for the Reverend Dom Hugh Diman Scholarship or an Abbey Scholarship should check the appropriate box on the Admissions application.
In order to receive full consideration for the Merit Scholarships, a candidate must complete all admissions requirements by January 31.

Recipients of both the Diman and Abbey Scholarships will be notified on March 10. All merit scholarships are renewed each year of the student's career at Portsmouth, provided recipients maintain a high academic average and good citizenship. It is Portsmouth Abbey School's expectation that merit scholarship recipients will contribute significantly to the life of the School.
