The English Department seeks above all to fulfill the School’s Mission Statement: We believe it is vitally important to introduce our students to the classics and the best of the Western intellectual tradition. In doing so, we endeavor to teach our students, as Jacques Barzun states, “to read differently,” thereby enlarging their vision and developing in them “habits of concentration, scrutiny, and sensitivity to implication” which will enhance their power “of judging life situations and human character.” Students learn the essential principles of both rhetoric and poetics, providing them with a language and a technique for critical reading and for persuasive writing. The first two years stress the mechanics of writing. During the Fourth Form year, small writing sections of no more than eight students meet two or three times a week to study essay writing and poetry intensively. We also foster creative writing and public speaking in all four Forms.
