English 1
English 1 seeks to instill fundamental skills and an appreciation for reading that will serve as a foundation for the rest of the English curriculum. Of primary importance is the teaching of those skills essential for the development of careful reading and analysis of complex texts. Students are introduced to the major literary genres: fiction, poetry, and drama. Frequent critical and creative writing assignments help students master basic composition skills, while in-class reading and oral presentations improve their public speaking skills. All Third Form students attend a library orientation, given by the School Librarian to acquaint them in using the Library as a learning resource. The theme of the journey, introduced by the summer reader, The Odyssey, continues into the Fall Term with the reading of Beowulf. Students read two Shakespeare plays during the Winter Term, and the year concludes with the reading of a 19th or 20th century novel. Throughout the year, students complete units in poetry and the short story, as well as working on grammar and vocabulary building. In the Spring term, all English 1 students take the Portsmouth Abbey Writing Assessment, a timed ex tempore essay test.
