English 3

This is a survey course emphasizing American Literature. Since students will be taking United States History simultaneously, they are encouraged to gain, in addition to critical reading skills, a sense of the historical background behind the literature. Students write bi-weekly critical or expository essays, either in class or as homework. All students write a major critical paper (the Independent Study Project) during the Winter Term. Prior to the PSAT and SAT I, students prepare for the verbal sections. Works and authors studied in recent years include: short stories by Hawthorne, Melville, Faulkner, Hemingway and Chopin; American poetry; and selected American novels, including Huckleberry Finn, Moby Dick, Daisy Miller, and The Great Gatsby. In order to continue their English 1 and Humanities education in the Western classics, students also read Oedipus Rex, and Hamlet. Selected students take the Advanced Placement English Language Examination in May.
