English 4
English 4 is an intensive writing course. The students read classic and contemporary model essays and practice the modes of academic discourse (e.g. description, classification, process, comparison-contrast, argument) they will need in their college courses. During the Fall Term, all students write a sample college-application essay for teacher evaluation. The additional literature for the year is chosen by the teacher, and may range from a traditional survey of British Literature to works sharing a particular theme. Recent offerings have included: "Utopian Literature" (Plato's Republic, More's Utopia, Huxley's Brave New World, and other works) and "Visions of Reality" (works by Kafka, Marquez, and others).
