Ancient/Medieval History

This course covers the development of Western civilization from the 3rd millennium BC to the 14th century. Numerous civilizations are addressed; however, the focus is on the ancient Greeks, the Romans, and Europeans of the Middle Ages. An important theme is the role of Christianity and Benedictine monasticism in the growth of Western civilization. The course introduces students to historical methodology; students begin to learn to examine sources critically. A major course requirement is the writing of a substantively sound and technically correct research paper.
