Portsmouth Abbey School
Combining Academics and Athletics in College.

1. Reasons To Play: Athletics at most colleges are educational in design.  Student/Athletes who pursue college athletics have a passion to play and recognize athletics will enhance their college education and their development. You will have the time to play it is a matter of whether you have the passion.

2. Find the right fit academically and athletically
    a. College counselor
    b. Coach and /or Athletic Director
    c. Internet
    d. Recruiting venues such as select camps and showcases.
    e. Clearing House(NCAA) Division I prospects

3. Initiate the process by writing a letter to the coach.  Go to the web and fill out recruiting forms.

4. First visit:  A general visit in the spring or summer (tour, interview, meet the coach)

5. Second visit: Most often arranged through the coach and includes going to class, meeting teammates, and spending an overnight. Your overnight recruiting visit should not interfere with Portsmouth Abbey obligations. Plan ahead!

Understand the recruiting process:
1. Everyone is a recruit early! Just as you streamline your list so do college coaches.
2. Coaches will help you determine if their school is a match.  Have an unofficial transcript available for the coach.
3. Your participation is very important.  Communicate!

Al Brown, Head Lacrosse Coach
Bates College
Lewiston, ME  04240

Dear Coach Brown:

I am writing to you to express my interest in Bates College and the men's lacrosse program.  Presently I am a junior student/athlete at Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts.  I am interested in attending a college where I can combine strong academics and a competitive lacrosse program.

My academic background includes a 92.7 GPA, 1350 on my SAT's (700V/650M) and three advanced placement classes in history, English and biology.  I am a diligent student interested in a strong liberal arts curriculum.

I have been a starter for the past three seasons on the varsity lacrosse team and have been named captain for my senior year.  Last season I scored 32 goals and 34 assists and was named first team all-league in the Independent School League.  I am also a member of the varsity football and ice hockey teams.  I enjoy both football and hockey but will focus on my academics and lacrosse in college.

I am excited about the opportunities that exist at Bates and would appreciate if you would send me any information that would be helpful in learning more about Bates College.

Sincerely,
