"English is the academic skill," according to Dr. Michael Bonin, Head of the Portsmouth Abbey School English Department and the new Summer English Program. "Learning to use the language is learning to think. The ability to form and express your ideas - on paper and in person - is at the heart of liberal arts education. A student who cannot explain, analyze or convince will struggle in all subjects."
That is why Dr. Bonin is heading up the dynamic new Summer English Program being offered this summer at Portsmouth Abbey. Courses will include Composition, Public Speaking, ESL, Latin, Creative Writing, Study Skills and Literature/Reading. In short, everything a student will need to hone his or her skills for the coming academic year, and be prepared to tackle the ever-competitive SATs.
In addition, students will enjoy two to four weeks of sun and fun on the shores of Narragansett Bay, weekend trips to Newport and Boston, and the joy of making new friends from all over the world. Director of Recreational Athletics Becky Swissler has created an afternoon program of activities that takes full advantage of Portsmouth Abbey's beautiful 500-acre bayside campus and promises a great time for all.
Enrollment is going on now, so visit our Summer Programs section for more details: http://www.portsmouthabbey.org/page/1994
