The Seventh Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, held at Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth on Friday, September 28, went off without a hitch, thanks to help from Mother Nature and a terrific group of Abbey alumni and friends who came out to hit the links and support the School.
The 21 foursomes who participated enjoyed flawless weather -- which in itself was cause for celebration, given that local forecasts had called for inclement weather -- and good company along the links-style course. The day began with a hearty brunch under the riding tent, followed by a pre-tournament clinic for those golfers who wanted a few tips before heading out onto the course. Given by Carnegie Abbey's Director of Instruction, Scott Spence, the first-time clinic was well attended.
Following the conclusion of play, the golfers and their spouses gathered at Carnegie Abbey Club to enjoy cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a delicious buffet dinner. Winning golfers were presented with gift certificates to the Carnegie Abbey Pro Shop by Headmaster Jim De Vecchi and Board Chairman David Moran '71, himself a seven-time participant along with Jose Juan '90 and C. Brady '94 Cebrian. A silent auction accompanied the dinner, with numerous golf packages, Celtics tickets and Red Sox tickets going to high bidders.
The foursome of Ed McHugh '49, his son Michael McHugh, Tony Manory P '11 and Portsmouth faculty member Shane McCarthy came in with the Low Gross. Low Net First Place went to Timothy O'Neill P'00, Ed Hurley, Dennis Carvalho and Patrick Rooney '65; Low Net Second Place, to Jonathan Adelman, Mike Garvey '70, Andy Vecchione and Deirdre Cavanagh. Low New Third Place went to Paul Caucio '70, Kevin Hunt '70, Peter Hunt '71 and Christopher Quinn '70. Mark Markell took home the prize for the longest drive and Andy Ulrich earned honors for Closest-to-the-Pin.
Proceeds from the tournament raised approximately $30,000 for scholarships.
