Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales Come to Portsmouth This Weekend With "Into the Woods"
February 21, 2008

Broadway comes once again to Portsmouth this weekend when the Abbey Players present the Tony Award-winning musical, "Into the Woods."  Based on four Brothers Grimm fairy tales, the at-times funny, at-times emotional plot blends Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel with contemporary realities, complete with twists and turns of fate.  With an original story by James Lapine and strong musical score by Stephen Sondheim, the characters in this renowned production, which premiered on Broadway in 1987, learn important life-lessons about what it takes to live, if possible, "happily ever after."

Mr. Jay Bragan, head of performing arts, says of the winter musical, "This wonderful show is full of surprises and magic.  It says to us, 'Be careful what you wish for.'  Life is full of complexities, and fairy tales have a special way of helping teach us life's lessons."

"Into the Woods" is directed by Mr. Bragan, with technical direction by Br. Joseph Byron.  Local professionals collaborated with the Abbey cast and crew on stage set and design, costume design, and the use of marionettes to help tell the fairly tales.

Don't miss "Into the Woods," another top-notch Abbey Players' production, this weekend!
