When Rev. Hugh Diman founded Portsmouth Abbey School in 1926 on the shores of magnificent Narragansett Bay, he envisioned a school like no other: an American boarding school founded on the ideals of the centuries-old English Benedictine tradition. He strove to create a Catholic school that would foster its students' intellectual, physical, and spiritual growth -- a school that would graduate ambitious, confident, and loving human beings.
Ever encouraging students to live life fully, to stay curious, to engage. At Portsmouth Abbey, we work to nurture and educate the whole person, knowing that the lessons students gain in four years here will stay with them far beyond their classroom days. Daily, students learn to balance their studies, activities, and social lives. Boys and girls from a wide variety of faiths and backgrounds live together, forming friendships over late-night pizzas, playing side-by-side on sports teams, and finding respect for one another. At Portsmouth Abbey, the ultimate expression of respect for one's self as a place that our students take with them when they graduate -- a place of beauty, discovery, and growth.
