Congratulations to our Portsmouth Abbey
wrestlers, Robert Sucsy '13 and Rasaanh Matra '13, who competed in the New
England Championship held at Choate Rosemary Hall on Friday and Saturday,
February 15 and 16, 2013.
Robert Sucsy '13 won his contest in a tight round
against a wrestler from Belmont Hill on the first day of competition, thereby
qualifying for day two of the tournament. Robert lost his first match on Saturday
to the wrestler who would eventually win the 170 lb bracket, but came back
victorious in his second contest of the day, pinning his opponent to guarantee
his placement in the top eight overall. In a close decision against a
tough wrestler, Robert bested his opponent in his next match, automatically
placing him in the top four of the tournament. In his final match of the
competition match - the consolation finals for third place - Robert was
defeated by a Roxbury Latin wrestler. Overall, Robert placed fourth in the New
England Championship. Coach Adam Card stated, "Robert has been a great
competitor and captain on my team. He comes to practice everyday prepared
to work hard and lead by example. His success this year has set a great
example for the younger, less experienced members of our squad."
Rasaanh Matra '13 competed in the highly
competitive tournament as well. According to Coach Card, "Rasaanh fought
hard, but was eliminated after a tough second match on Friday."
Great job, Robert and Rasaanh, and
congratulations to Coach Adam Card and the wrestling Ravens for an exciting return
season for Portsmouth Abbey after 19 years!
