Fourth Former Graham Kilvert sailed his way to a second-place finish in the Radial division of the recently held New England Singlehanded Championships, which took place at the Wickford (RI) Yacht Club.
Kilvert, a Fourth Former from Barrington, and the 20 other laser sailors in the Radial division tackled blustery conditions on Narragansett Bay, racing in steady winds of 28 knots, with gusts topping more than 42 knots. Due to the rough conditions, only three races were able to be completed.
Kilvert's second-place finish qualifies him for the 2012-13 Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) High School Singlehanded Championship for the Cressy Trophy, which will be held November 9-11 at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach, California. There, he will compete for the national championship against 17 other sailors from around the country in the Radial division.
Sixth Former Michael Madigan, of Newport Beach, CA, finished fourth in the full-rig division of the New England regatta, one place out of qualifying for the Nationals.
Five Portsmouth Abbey sailors, including Kilvert, have qualified for the National Singlehanded Championships in the past four years.
Congratulation, Graham, and good luck at the Nationals!
