The Providence Journal has announced the winners of the Providence Journal Scholastic High School Competition 2008. Members of the The Beacon staff have earned awards in a number of categories:
First Place for Best Editorial/Opinion Writing went to Marisa Edmonds '08 for her editorial on Religion at Portsmouth Abbey.
Second Place for Best In-Depth Reporting went to Sara Munda '10 for her article on Girls Arriving at the Abbey.
Third Place for Best Features article went to Kathryn Yao '10 for her article on Dress Code.
Third Place for Best Sports Story went to Quent Dickmann '10 for his article on Cross Country.
Second Runner-Up for Best High School Newspaper in Rhode Island goes to The Beacon.
