The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) takes place during March break each year when Abbey students, faculty and current parents continue the School tradition of service in the impoverished Appalachian region by helping to rebuild and renovate homes for families in need. The 2012 ASP will be in Chavies, Kentucky, from March 10-18. This will be the first time that the Abbey has gone to Kentucky for the Service Project.
Once there, the 20-plus students, along with several faculty and parents as chaperones, will divide into groups, each with a different home to work on throughout the week. They will renovate the homes each day and will stay at an ASP Service Center each night. In past years, projects have included: shingling roofs; laying tile, carpet and floorboards; rebuilding beam work; setting a ceiling; sheet rock work; basic plumbing; renovating bathrooms and kitchens; building doors and decks; and more.
The project is headed by Ms. Therese Thomas, Director of Christian Community Service. 2012 will mark the 18th consecutive year that the Portsmouth Abbey community will participate in the ASP. The combined costs for the trip will total more than $18,000. The students involved in the project must raise enough funds to cover transportation and lodging expenses, as well as food and the tools they will need to complete their projects.
The Service Project has been a great success in previous years, and it could not be continued without the generous, ongoing support of many School parents, family members and friends. Students involved with the ASP hold bake sales throughout the year as well as dress-down days and various other fundraising activities to raise enough money to go on the trip.
Our annual ASP fund-raising raffle is underway, with all proceeds going directly to fund the trip. Prizes include a round of golf at Carnegie Abbey, a weekend getaway, restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, a flat-screen TV, a Samsung Tablet, and much more!!
