Tradition
As one of the first schools to offer boys' lacrosse in Rhode Island, Portsmouth Abbey has been fielding competitive lacrosse teams for more than 30 years. The Varsity and Junior Varsity programs provide over 55 boys the opportunity to develop their abilities at an appropriate level.
The 2011 Ravens' Varsity team finished with an overall record of 14-2, and went 7-0 in the EIL. The team captured the EIL championship and Morgan Green (goalie, Portsmouth, RI) was selected as the fourth US Lacrosse All-American since 2003. Mitchell Green (LSM, Portsmouth, RI) was selected as a US Lacrosse Academic All-American. Head Coach Al Brown was selected as EIL Coach of the Year.
League/Schedule
Portsmouth Abbey teams face rigorous competition from some of New England's top preparatory schools. As a member of the EIL (Eastern Independent League) we face off against league rivals Pingree School, Berwick Academy, Lexington Christian Academy, Bancroft School and Concord Academy and non-league opponents Phillips Exeter Academy,
St. George's School, Pomfret School, Tabor Academy, Cushing Academy and Canterbury School.
Coaching Philosophy
The boys' lacrosse program at Portsmouth Abbey encourages students to reach their potential in the classroom and on the lacrosse field. Players are challenged to become better stick handlers, improve their tactical knowledge, set individual goals and to be team players. Our practices are fast-paced and include many transitional drills and situations. The coaches encourage players to participate in other sports, which helps to develop their overall athleticism. A majority of our lacrosse players are two and three-sport letter winners. We also encourage players to participate in summer camps. Many of our rising seniors and juniors attend the Top 150 recruiting camp held each summer at Portsmouth Abbey School.
Lacrosse in College
We assist each senior who is interested in combining academics and lacrosse in college to find a good match. Recent Portsmouth Abbey graduates have continued their academic and lacrosse careers at the following institutions: Haverford (Captain, 2006 team), Fairfield University (Captain, 2005 team), Dickinson College, Wheaton College, Bates College, Air Force Academy, West Point, St. Anselm's College, Hamilton College, Union College (Captain, 2011 team), Rollins, Kenyon College, Washington and Lee, Guilford College, Merrimack College, Endicott College and Springfield College.
