Expenses
Personal Account for Boarding Students
This account is for the student's individual spending money. Normally parents deposit at least USD$100 at the beginning of the session. Students are allowed to make withdrawals from their balance during posted hours. Credit balances are refunded at the end of the program.
Boarding Students
Overall fee for boarding students: USD $6,100.00. This amount covers tuition, room and board, textbooks, routine medical attention, tickets and admission fees for the weekend activities. In general, fees incurred by the entire Summer Program are included, while fees incurred by individuals are not. Examples of fees that are not covered would be personal expenses in the School bookstore, fees for medical attention outside of the School infirmary, or transportation to and from the airports by students, or participation in certain programs in the afternoons.
Day Students
Overall fee for day students: USD $3,500.00. This amount covers tuition, meals, routine medical attention, and textbooks. Day students may leave either after lunch or after sports (Monday through Saturday). Day students are welcome to participate in the weekend trips if space is available at an additional fee of $250.00.
Alumni/Sibling Discount
A discount of 10 percent will be offered to any child of a Portsmouth alumnus, to any family enrolling two or more siblings in the Summer Program, and to Portsmouth Abbey families who currently have a student enrolled in the regular School. This discount will be given for the fee only and does not include any other expenses incurred by the student during the Summer Program.
Deposit and Tuition Payments
A non-refundable deposit of USD $600.00 is to be paid two weeks after acceptance to the program. The balance must be paid in full by June 1. Please make checks payable to Portsmouth Abbey School. All payments to the Summer School, if made by check, must be drawn in US currency against a US bank. Payment may be made by credit card; see below. Please note that there are no refunds made after the first week of the program, nor are refunds granted if a student is dismissed from the program.
Housing for Boarding Students
Students live in Portsmouth Abbey School dormitories in singles and doubles. Students are not allowed to visit the dorm of the opposite sex.
Day students will be sharing a common space in their respective dorms, where they can leave belongings during the day.
Medical Care
The School Infirmary is open each day at specific and published times and a registered nurse is on duty. At times when the infirmary is closed, a registered nurse is always on call. For emergency cases, Newport Hospital is a few minutes away.
The School physician must have a complete health history of every student prior to the start of the Summer Program.
Parents are requested to provide this information by using the online forms on the "Forms and Acceptance Page". Please print them out and return to us. A student whose medical forms have not been received will not be allowed to participate in sports activities and in some cases may not be allowed to remain at the School.
Please note that the report of a recent physical examination is required as part of the health history. There is an additional charge for students who need to have a physical examination when they arrive.
Students who need to see a physician will be treated by the Pediatricians of Aquidneck Medical Associates.
All students will be enrolled in an accident insurance plan as part of their tuition. Students are required to have their own medical insurance that covers illness and injuries not covered by the Student accident insurance plan. Proof of health insurance will be required no later than registration.
Rules & Discipline
Violation of any of these rules will result in disciplinary action, and may result in dismissal:
1. Lying, cheating, or stealing.
2. Violence to the person, property, or good name of another, including e-mails, text messages, and the use of social media suites.
3. Possession, distribution, use, or sale of alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia, firearms, firecrackers, explosives, or knives.
4. Entering a House (dorm) other than your own, absence from your own House between 10 PM and 6 AM, or any unauthorized absence from School grounds.
5. Possession or use of tobacco products on or off campus.
6. Flagrant neglect of School obligations, continual abuse of regulations, or continual improper behavior.
In general, students who are unwilling to follow the School's rules or who endanger the welfare of other students will be dismissed.
Weekends Off Campus
The Summer School Office should be contacted by the previous Wednesday if a parent or guardian wishes to grant their child permission to spend the weekend away from campus with them or with adults authorized by them. After hearing from the parents, the Director will normally grant permission if the student is free of academic and disciplinary responsibilities. A weekend begins Saturday at 1 PM and ends Sunday at 7:15 PM.
Clothing & Equipment
Daily dress is informal. Each student should bring two pairs of sneakers, two bathing suits, and appropriate clothing for Mass (collared shirt or blouse, dress slacks or appropriate-length skirt, dress shoes or sandals--no flip-flops). Each student must provide towels and blankets, and should bring an alarm clock or watch. Students should also bring one warm sweater, shorts, casual skirts, slacks or jeans, rain wear, and any athletic equipment the student wishes to use during the summer. Students' clothing should be clearly marked. Please note that students do their own laundry in coin-operated appliances located in the Houses. We recommend students may bring a small electric fan, since the dorm rooms are not air-conditioned.
Students may bring laptop computers for schoolwork, though the Houses and classroom buildings have computer labs. We do not permit any viewing of inappropriate online content.
The School is not responsible for stolen articles, and it is suggested that each student bring a suitcase or trunk that can be locked to store valuables. Documents, such as passports, tickets for transportation, travelers' checks, etc., must be filed in the Director's Office upon arrival. They are made available to the student when needed or at the end of the program.
