Athletic participation plays an integral role in the development of Portsmouth Abbey students. Athletic participation offers unique learning opportunities that complement the cognitive, spiritual, social and emotional growth that students experience in other areas of school life.

Our diverse athletic offerings provide boys and girls with equal athletic opportunities in a variety of team and individual sports. We offer 23 varsity teams and 38 athletic teams. The younger and less experienced athlete has an opportunity to compete against equitable competition, as does the varsity athlete. Although wins and losses are important we recognize that athletics are educational and provide each student with an opportunity to develop his or her whole self.

Competition
Portsmouth Abbey is proud to be a member of the prestigious Eastern Independent League (EIL).The EIL provides Portsmouth Abbey student/athletes the opportunity for rigorous competition with schools of similar size and athletic philosophy. EIL member schools include Bancroft School, Beaver Country Day, Berwick Academy, Chapel Hill - Chauncey Hall, Concord Academy, Dana Hall School, Landmark School, Lexington Christian, Newton Country Day, Pingree School and the Winsor School. We also compete against traditional rivals St. Georges, Tabor, Pomfret, Worcester Academy, and Vermont Academy.

Mission Statement of the Eastern Independent League
The Eastern Independent League was created by its member schools in a spirit of trust and shared commitment to the highest ideals of sportsmanship, healthy competition, and mutual respect. Member schools believe that their athletic programs are an integral part of their educational programs and should provide the same opportunities for instruction, participation, growth and success as any other opportunity offered by the school.
