League/Schedule
Portsmouth Abbey competes in the historic and rigorous New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (NEPSIHA). The Abbey is also a member of the Holt Conference, along with rivals Berwick, Hebron, Kents Hill, Kingswood-Oxford, North Yarmouth, Pingree, and Worcester. Traditional non-league games are played against the likes of Groton, Roxbury Latin, St. George's, and Vermont Academy. The Portsmouth Abbey Varsity program plays 20 games a season, including the prestigious Brooks-Pingree tournament in December. The team finished with a record of 0-9 in the Holt Conference during the 2007-2008 season, and had an overall record of 3-16.
Coaching Philosophy
The Boys' Hockey program at Portsmouth Abbey encourages students to reach their potential in the classroom and in the rink. Players are challenged to become better puck handlers, improve their tactical knowledge, and set individual goals to be team players. Practices are fast-paced and include many transitional drills and situations. Coaches believe in a style of play based on sound defensive principles and a quick transition offense. The coaches also encourage players to participate in other sports, which helps to develop their overall athleticism. The program also fosters a healthy respect for coaches, officials, opponents, and the game itself.
