Portsmouth Abbey Teacher? Monk? Intern!

Does this concept appeal to you?

Single, Catholic men aged 21-45 who have completed college and wish to spend some time experiencing monastic life are invited to apply for a teaching internship involving an 10-week term assignment in the school for which a stipend will be provided based on experience. The intern will live in the monastery and participate fully in the monk's life of prayer, work, rest, and recreation with our monastic community. A limited number of internships are available for the Fall Term (Sept-mid-Nov.), Winter Term (Dec-Feb), Spring Term (mid-Mar-May), and 5-week Summer School (end-June-end-July).

A monk's life should have about it a continual attitude toward prayer, whether the monk is in church or busy at work. St. Benedict did not specify the type of work monks should perform, he stipulated only that they should earn their living by their own labors. Any kind of work that can be done in a spirit of corporate prayer and Christ-like love is proper to a Benedictine monastery. So it is very fitting that the monks of Portsmouth Abbey should maintain a school. Being so engaged, the communal and liturgical life of the monastery overflows into one of the most valuable contributions to the well-being of society. A school provides the type of fruitful work which enables the monk to avoid danger, sometimes associated with monasticism, of spiritual self-centeredness and a sense of elitism. Being employed in a task that is fully human, he is neither an escapist from his social obligations nor a cultivator of "a fugitive and cloistered virtue." From teaching and being responsible for the young, the monk may learn a unique form of self-less-ness which can be realized in the exercise of spiritual fatherhood.

During your stay, you will be able to experience the life of the monk, including daily common prayer, spiritual reading, manual labor, conferences on some topic of monastic history or spirituality, as well as time for rest and exercise. The Monastic Life Intern Program is a unique opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with monastic life and consider the possibility that, This Call Is For You!
