Emmett, St. Bede's House
Vth Form Day Student from Tiverton, RI

Hometown: Tiverton, RI

Classes: Precalculus, English Literature AP, Philosophy Independent Study, Art History AP, Conversatio (Faith & Life Independent Study), Biology

Extra-Curricular Activities: Stage Crew, Track, Squash, Radio

Three adjectives to describe you: Outgoing, Social, Determined

Favorite movie/TV show: Harold & Maude, The Office

Favorite Abbey Tradition: Breakfast for dinner during exam week. Once every exam week, the dining hall makes waffles and pancakes and eggs for dinner.

Favorite Part of Going to a Boarding School: You really get to know and trust your teachers because they're always there for you

Favorite Class and Why: Humanities my IVth Form year with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It was such an amazing and intellectual class that pulled everything from history to literature to art together into one class.

Favorite Teacher and Why: Ms. McDermott. She's easily one of the most intelligent people I've ever met and every conversation I have with her, from movies to books to anything at all, is amazing. I know she's always there with great advice and incredible insight.

Favorite Dorm Memory: Headmaster's Run, where all the dorms compete against each other one afternoon in a school-wide race

Favorite Dining Hall Meal: Any sandwich Jane makes from Jane's Diva Sandwich Deli. She always knows what I'm in the mood for!

If you had to give advice to a new student, what would it be, and why: Get to know one monk and one teacher really well. It's so important to use the incredible advantages being an Abbey student gives you. Talking with the monks has hugely affected my learning and understanding of the world. And if you know at least one teacher really well, you always have someone wiser and more experienced to go to for help, advice, or just to talk.

Why I chose PAS: Because of the teachers, students, and opportunities that I didn't find anywhere else I looked.

PAS is: An outlet to explore whatever interests you may have, knowing you can always try again.

Favorite Weekend Activity: I'm a movie addict, so watching movies with friends. Or anything involving pizza.

Favorite thing about living on Aquidneck Island: Being literally feet away from the Bay.

Most important thing you've learned at PAS: It's ok to explore new things and fail at them, but to never give up.

October 3, 2011

Hey everyone!

I can't believe this is only our 4th week back to school! It's only October and it's flying by so quickly! I love 6th Form (senior) year so far. I'm already in the depths of the college search process, but thanks to my college advisor, Mrs. Smith, it's going well. I think I'm most excited about my classes this year. During spring term last year, I was able to organize a philosophy independent study with 2 friends. We're being led by Father Paschal as our faculty advisor, and it is so incredible. I wanted to take philosophy after Humanities in 4th Form (sophomore year), which included a brief overview of modern philosophy. So this independent study will be a more in depth look. I'm also taking art history, English AP (advanced placement), biology, pre-calculus, and faith and life.

Even though we're only a month into school, we've already had a lot of activities going on. Two weeks ago we had our first tuck dance! Tuck is Abbey slang for our student center, which is where we have our dances. I'm on the social committee again this year. We've also done an outdoor movie night last weekend, which was really fun. My friend Toni and I started our radio show again 2 weeks ago! The Abbey has it's own radio station, 90.7 FM WJHD, right on campus that everyone can use. Last year we would interview a member of the faculty, or a student, or a school guest every Wednesday night. This year we're on Friday nights at 6-7 and we've already done 4 or 5 interviews!

Last Friday, we also had the first Dom Luke Childs Lecture. The Dom Luke Childs Lecture Series is a series of lectures, which happen a few times a term throughout the year, covering all kinds of topics. Our first guest was Tim Gunn, from the TV show Project Runway. He gave such a great lecture about all sorts of different things. I was most excited because my friend Toni and I were asked to give him a tour around campus, and then he let us interview him!

I'm really excited to be back in the feel of the school year! Talk to you soon!
