REVERENCE FOR GOD AND THE HUMAN PERSON
RESPECT FOR LEARNING AND ORDER
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SHARED EXPERIENCE OF COMMUNITY LIFE
This is the tenth in an ongoing series of informal communications with Portsmouth Abbey School’s constituents. Current parents, alumni/ae, past parents and friends have all expressed an interest in hearing more about our school, more often. It is meant to be one element among a number of activities designed to keep you better informed about the School, the Monastery and our community.
All Hail the Queen! The second program in this year's Dom Luke Child lecture series at Portsmouth Abbey School entitled, "Elizabeth I- Her Life and Times in Her Own Words," took place on Tuesday, February 24, in the Auditorium. Actress Marilyn Murphy Meardon of Trinity and 2nd Story Theatre gave a stirring 30-minute presentation in her own words, and in costume, depicting the life of Elizabeth I in England. Marilyn educated the audience about Queen Elizabeth's view of historical events that took place during her reign and entertained student's questions after her performance. She has developed this entertaining program using the writings and letters of Elizabeth I to portray the monarch and her period of history, and has performed the program many times for the public with funding from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. Pictures of this program can be viewed in the website Photo Galleries.
McDowell Mission Service Trip Another Huge Success: 24 Students, 4 faculty members and 2 Current Parents gave up their Spring Vacation to participate in the McDowell County Mission Service Trip from March 13-20. The mission trip to Gary, West Virginia was centered on the four tenets of patience, flexibility, understanding, and focus, as students and chaperones continued the Abbey tradition of service in the impoverished Appalachian region by helping to rebuild and renovate homes. 3 student-led groups worked on projects that included roofing, building steps, emptying gutters, replacing ceiling tiles and flooring. This year's trip marked Mr. Clarence Chenoweth's 10th consecutive year administering such a service trip and would not have been possible without his leadership and direction. This work is meaningful in many ways and Portsmouth Abbey students and faculty look forward to continuing to serve the community for years to come. Stay tuned to the Portsmouth Abbey Photo Galleries for pictures of the trip.
