Every gift, large or small, unrestricted or restricted, is important to Portsmouth Abbey. There are many ways of supporting the School's people and programs. Careful planning can help maximize the advantages to both the donor and the School. A range of some of the methods that may be used to give include:
Cash
The majority of the gifts received by Portsmouth Abbey are outright cash contributions. The donor may deduct the gift up to 50% of adjusted gross income. If a gift totals more than the 50% limit, the excess may be carried forward into as many as five additional tax years until the deduction is exhausted.
Cash gifts can be made by check or credit card. Checks should be made out to Portsmouth Abbey School and sent to Portsmouth Abbey School, Alumni/Development Office, 285 Cory's Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Appreciated securities
Gifts of appreciated stocks are a particularly advantageous way of making a donation to Portsmouth Abbey because such gifts provide greater tax benefits than those available to a donor of an equivalent value in cash.
Gifts of appreciated securities held by the donor for more than one year provide the donor with two tax benefits: (1) no capital gains tax is imposed on the "long term" appreciated portion of the gift, and (2) the donor is entitled to a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift. Federal law limits the deduction to 30 percent of the donor's adjusted gross income in a single year, but allows the five-year carry-over described above, limited to 30 percent of adjusted gross income in each carry-over year.

Matching Gifts
Many gifts to Portsmouth Abbey are double or even tripled because corporations and foundations match gifts made by their employees, retirees and directors. Typically, Portsmouth Abbey receives over $50,000 each year because our donors took the extra steps necessary to maximize their gifts by obtaining a matching gift form from a corporation or foundation with which they are affiliated. Please check with your organization or contact Development Officer Polly Carter (pcarter@portsmouthabbey.org) via email or by phone at 401-643-1204 to find out if your company matches gifts.
If you or your spouses are affiliated with an organization that will match gifts to private secondary schools, please forward the matching gift form along with your gift to Portsmouth Abbey. If making your gift online, send the form separately by mail. Please check with your personnel office to obtain a matching gift form.

Other assets that can be used to fund these and other gifts arrangements include appreciated real estate (commercial or residential; art, books or collections that have appreciated in value; life insurance; and retirement plan assets.
