FACULTY POSITIONS FOR THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Portsmouth Abbey School is recognized as the premier independent Catholic Benedictine boarding and day college preparatory school in the nation.  Its mission is to help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace, fostering reverence for God and the human person, respect for learning and order, and responsibility for community life.  Admission to the school is selective; it is fully enrolled with 350 boys and girls.  The campus is situated on the shores of Narragansett Bay, 15 minutes from Newport, RI.  The school is overseen by the monastic community belonging to the English Benedictine Congregation and is governed by a Board of Regents.

ENGLISH TEACHER:
A full-time instructor to teach all levels of English.  Portsmouth Abbey offers a classical education, so a candidate should have a strong background in the traditional English and American literary canon.  The candidate must have strong coaching skills; football and lacrosse or basketball coaching ability is highly desirable.  The candidate must also be able to fulfill residential responsibilities. To begin in mid-August 2010.

HUMANITIES TEACHER:
A full-time instructor to teach the Humanities course.  The ability to coach and to fulfill residential responsibilities is highly desirable.  To begin in mid-August 2010.

The Humanities curriculum, which substitutes for separate offerings in English, European History, and Christian Doctrine, provides all Fourth Form (10th grade) students with a solid foundation in each of these disciplines through an intensive interdisciplinary grounding in the language, literature, history, and thought of the West from St. Paul and St. Augustine to the present. Seminars provide students with the opportunity to analyze and discuss the great books of the Western Tradition, while lectures and plenary sessions provide necessary background and context. Small writing sections allow for individual work in writing and in critical thinking, and help to sharpen student skills in rhetoric and poetics. Texts read last year include Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Goethe, Ibsen, Joyce, St. Paul, St. Augustine, St. Thomas More, Luther, Machiavelli, Descartes, Pascal, Rousseau, St. Thomas Aquinas, Kierkegaard and Newman.
