Portsmouth Abbey School student selected as Presidential Scholar
May 6, 2004

Sixth Form (Senior) student and Portsmouth native, Kimberley Taylor is one of two students from Rhode Island to be selected as a Presidential Scholar.  The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The Program annually selects one male and one female student from each state on the basis of outstanding scholarship, service, leadership and creativity through a rigorous selection and review process administered by the US Department of Education.

In June, Kim will travel to Washington, D.C. as a guest of the program for National Recognition Week: five days of educational, celebratory and fellowship activities. She will participate in seminars, lectures and workshops with government officials, elected representatives, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people; perform community service; and attend cultural events and ceremonies held in their honor. The week culminates in a White House-sponsored event at which the Scholars are awarded the Presidential Medallion.

Kim is a Dean's List student who has served as co-captain of her Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse teams this year.  This past winter, Kim won the Pfeffer Cup for her leadership and commitment to the Varsity Girls Basketball program.  Aside from her athletic endeavors, Kimberley hosts a show on the Portsmouth Abbey Radio Station, is a member of Red Key Society giving tours to prospective students and their families, and volunteers her time to the Star Kids Foundation of Rhode Island.

Kimberley is the daughter of William and Terrill Taylor of Portsmouth, and will be attending Williams College in Williamstown, MA in the fall.
