The 8th Annual Walk for Cancer was held on campus Sunday, May 11. The walk began under sunny skies at 11:00 a.m. from the Carlos Araujo Track, with participants following a two-mile course around the perimeter of campus.
Many walked to honor a loved one who is currently battling, or has survived, cancer; others walked in memory of family members or friends who lost their lives to the disease. All walked to raise awareness of and funds to help find a cure for cancer, which will affect one in every two men, and one in every three women, during their lifetime. This year alone, cancer will kill more than 1,500 people every day.
The walk, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society, was started in 2001 by Keith Hoffman '05, his brother, Bill '00, and sister, Lisa '02, after losing their father to cancer. Since then, the Abbey community has raised more than $37,000 through the annual walk to help find a cure for the disease. Last year, nearly 75 Portsmouth Abbey students, faculty and families took part in the Walk for Cancer, which raised more than $7,000. This year's Walk for Cancer student coordinator is Harry Holden '08.
If you were unable to walk Sunday, but would like to contribute to the 8th Annual Walk for Cancer, please send a check, made payable to the American Cancer Society, in care of Harry Holden '08, Walk for Cancer 2008, Portsmouth Abbey School, 285 Cory's Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871. Contributions of any size will be gratefully accepted until this Friday, May 16.
