October 2021
Communitas is a Latin noun commonly referring either to community in which people are equal or to the very spirit of community. Our monthly parent newsletter is designed to enhance communication between the School and our parents.

Parent Participation Month
From October 15 – November 15, Portsmouth Abbey is celebrating the important role parent philanthropy plays at the School. We will be reaching out to you throughout October and November, and we hope you will consider making your Annual Fund commitment to help us reach our goal of 100% participation!
For questions, or if you would like to volunteer for the Parent Participation Month phonathon, please contact Director of the Annual Fund Alexandra Karppinen at akarppinen@portsmouthabbey.org or 401-643-1204.
The Office of Communications has created a new Weekly Activities Newsletter for the students. It will be posted on the Parent Portal under calendars. Check out last week's calendar here.
SPIRITUAL LIFE UPDATE - from Dan McQuillan
I am pleased to update you on the Spiritual Life of the school.
First, our lectio divina program is back! For those unfamiliar with lectio divina (Latin for "divine reading"), it refers to the contemplative and meditative reading of Scripture. Unlike Bible studies where the reader stands over the Scriptures to analyze them, in lectio, the reader takes a more receptive, meditative disposition. By taking such a disposition, one lets the "still, small voice" of God act on them. This practice has borne much fruit in the lives of our students, faculty, and families, and we are excited to invite new members into our program. READ MORE HERE
* Parents who are interested in praying lectio themselves are invited to do so on the Friday of Parents' Weekend. More information will be included in the Parents' Weekend registration packet.
School Dress begins after Parents' Weekend School dress begins Wednesday, Oct. 27. Thank you in advance for helping our community move safely toward a return to pre-covid standards. We are excited to continue to welcome back some of the traditions we have had to set aside in the last two years.
Complete information about the dress code. If you need help finding appropriate clothing for school dress, please see Mrs. Walter or Mr. Chenoweth.
One modification to school dress this year is that blazers will be optional for girls.
If you are an Abbey family who lives in the US, please consider hosting an international student throughout the break who is unable to travel home due to current COVID travel restrictions. If you are interested in doing so, please email Mr. Dare Odeyingbo at dodeyingbo@portsmouthabbey.org and indicate your interest. Thank you in advance for your hospitality.
We are looking forward to seeing each other this weekend at Parents' Weekend 2021! And for those families who cannot attend this year, there will be a slideshow posted the following week on the Parent Portal.
