Communitas is a Latin noun commonly referring either to community in which people are equal or to the very spirit of community. Our monthly parent newsletter is designed to enhance communication between the School and our parents.

Message from the Chairs

Dear Abbey Families,

Welcome, and echoing Abbot Michael at the Opening of School Mass on Monday, September 12, "Welcome home to the 2022-2023 school year's first day of classes, the 97th year of classes at Portsmouth Abbey School!"

Also, welcome to the September issue of Communitas, our parent newsletter.  Each month our Parents' Association will provide general school updates and information specific to each Form. This includes information on academic, social, spiritual, and athletics & performing arts events throughout the academic year.   In addition to this communication, other helpful resources include the Parent Portal, game results on the team pages, social media posts, Monthly Musings (an email from the School each month for all members of the Abbey community) and the bi-annual School magazine, The Bulletin.

The first week with all our Ravens on campus was filled with energy and excitement.  The week commenced with the Opening of School Mass and by the end of the week, our students were finding the rhythm of their classes, afternoon obligations, and evening routines. In the next few weeks, as the rhythm becomes smooth, opportunities for additional extracurriculars such as clubs and social events will be woven into the schedule.

We are honored to serve as the Chairs of the Parents' Association alongside our Form Chairs and International Liaisons and grateful for your continued engagement.   The Parents' Association welcomes all parents to volunteer and engage in school programs, initiatives, and events. Your contributions are critical to serving and supporting the Abbey's mission by fostering engagement and enhancing support between families and the Abbey to strengthen the student experience.

We look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks.  We will be hosting several events including virtual Form meetings in early October, Parents' Weekend at the end of October, and there will be many opportunities to meet with faculty, staff, our children's friends, and each other. throughout the year. Please feel free to contact us or your Form Chairs with any questions, comments, or ideas in the interim.

Again welcome, we so look forward to sharing the journey alongside your child as they grow in knowledge and grace.

Warmest regards,

Frank & Rhonda Landers

The College Counseling Office is connecting with students throughout the year and these messages are sent to the students' Abbey email and posted on the parent portal.

Coming up this week and next are the essay writing workshops between college counselors and the sixth form students.  For Form IV, V and VI, next week on September 28th at 7:00 PM the office is hosting a virtual webinar to familiarize parents with SMARTTRACK's services: perhaps a resource for your family to use as you plan for college.

Best,
