Portsmouth Abbey School Assistant Headmaster of Operations John Perreira, LATC, left, in hazardous-materials gear, undergoing swab training for COVID-19 testing as part of his service as a member of the Rhode Island Disaster Assistance Team/Medical Reserve Corp.
Assistant Headmaster of Operations John Perreira, LATC, as a member of the Rhode Island Disaster Assistance Team/Medical Reserve Corp, volunteered his services to the State of Rhode Island and was subsequently asked to participate in the COVID-19 pandemic training program. This experience afforded John not only the opportunity to help others in need but also to gain practical knowledge and training that may be valuable to the Portsmouth Abbey community in the future.
John commented, “Working alongside healthcare professionals and training through the Medical Corp, the Army, and FEMA has given me the skill set to plan and implement PPE protocols, logistical set-up and administration COVID-19 testing, administrative informational gathering, and tracing.”
With the encouragement of Headmaster Dan McDonough and Prior Administrator Father Michael Brunner, O.S.B, John has spent time during the week and on weekends over the spring term participating in this effort. “The training and active service will no doubt help in our planning for the opening of school this fall with an eye on vigilant safety of our students, faculty, staff and monks,” John noted.
In addition to John’s training this spring, he was also appointed to the Rhode Island Board of Athletic Trainers, a state appointment by the Office of the Secretary of State, in February 2020. The recommendation for the office was made by R.I. Director of Health Nicole Alexander-Scott, M.D., M.P.H., and approved by Governor Gina Raimondo.
John also serves as monastic cellarer to the Portsmouth Abbey Monastery and teaches science at the School.
