Knitting Club Brings Stress Relief to Abbey Students

One of Portsmouth Abbey School's newest student-run clubs focuses on mindfulness, relaxation, and stress relief - in the form of knitting. Conceptualized by Mia Wright '19 and Meghan Behnke '19, the club's aim is to learn a useful skill while providing a creative outlet to decompress.

Faculty advisor Mrs. Mary Jean McDonough guides the students - novices and pros alike - through different stitches, styles, and patterns. Students crochet and knit - some work on scarves, while others work to master a stitch before attempting a full project. Mary Jean, for her part, works on a crocheted hat, using five needles at a time.

"What I love most about knitting club is the longevity of the skills learned," Mia says. "Knitting is a skill that you can do for life, and it's always great to have an activity you can do."
