On February 25, 2021, the Mind & Market Club welcomed Stephen Holowesko '85 to speak to the Abbey Community, via Zoom, about finance and business management. Stephen has enjoyed a long career in varied fields ranging from education to finance and the nonprofit sector. Stephen currently manages a hedge fund in the Bahamas where he lives with his wife and children.
The Mind & Market club regularly welcomes alumni and other professionals like Stephen to speak about career experiences and to provide practical knowledge in the field of economics.
The club was initiated three years ago by Ken Zheng '20 and John Owen Habib '20 with the goal of fostering interest in economics. When Ken and John graduated last spring the club was handed off to David Yang '21 who currently acts as its president. Responsibilities are shared among David, Thomas Smith '21, and Michael Hyder '21, with Mr. Moffie as faculty advisor; Mr. Moffie also teaches math and is an assistant houseparent in St. Martin's House.
Club members work through a student investment fund that started at $50,000 US and recently reached a height of around $75,000, earning a rate-of-return steadily higher than those of the SP500 and Dow Jones indexes. The success of the fund is David's favorite accomplishment so far.
The main goal for the group this year is to help provide some normalcy despite the challenges of the pandemic. Club members have not been able to host as many events as they typically do but are looking to schedule more events, either virtually or in-person, once students return for the spring term.
