Poetry Out Loud 2021

On Tuesday evening, February 9, 2021, students and faculty gathered masked and socially distanced in the auditorium for the annual Poetry Out Loud Contest. Each year students are invited by the English and Performing Arts Departments to recite a poem of their choosing in front of their peers. English Department faculty members then vote on three finalists. The student who captures first place goes on to perform the poem in the Rhode Island state competition, this year to take place in the spring as a video submission-based competition.

This year, six students took part. Sarah '21 started the evening off with an original poem entitled "The Truth About Humans" before the official competition began.

In the end, the winners were

1st Place:  Casey Motta '21

2nd Place:  Sarah Machado '21

3rd Place:  Alex Adams '22

Casey recited I Carry Your Heart With Me by E.E Cummings and will go on to represent Portsmouth Abbey in the Rhode Island Competition next month, which, due to COVID is being held via ZOOM.
