Portsmouth Abbey Student Jennifer Shon ’25 Wins State Poetry Out Loud Competition

On Sunday, March 10, Portsmouth Abbey student Jennifer Shon ’25 competed with 13 students from around Rhode Island at the state’s Poetry Out Loud competition. The competition was held at the Greenwich Odeum Theater in East Greenwich.

In the first round, Shon recited two poems: “Golden Retrievals” by Mark Doty and “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus. She was one of five students to go on to the second round, where she recited “Say Grace” by Emily Jungmin Yoon. After careful deliberation by the three judges, Shon emerged as the winner of the competition. She was awarded a $200 prize, and Portsmouth Abbey School will receive $500 to purchase poetry books for the St. Thomas More Library.

Shon will compete with 50 students from around the United States at the 2024 Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., on May 1. The National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation will provide Jennifer and her family with transportation, food, and lodging. The competition will be streamed live so the Abbey community can tune in on the day of the event.
