Congratulations to our students of Latin for their achievements in the National Latin Exam.

Collectively, our Portsmouth Abbey students earned 16 gold and 21 silver medals at this year’s exam. One student, Alex Wei, has won four gold medals over his four years at Portsmouth Abbey; two students, Lily Lin and Alexandra Bordelon, earned perfect scores on their Latin II exams, and every student in Latin IV Poetry received a medal! Our gratitude goes out to the faculty advisor for this exam, Head of Classics Department Lizzie Benestad, and to our excellent Classics faculty.

The National Latin Exam (NLE) is a test given annually to Latin students across the United States and around the world. The philosophy of the National Latin Exam is predicated on providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of personal accomplishment and success in his or her study of the Latin language and culture. This opportunity exists for all students since, in the National Latin Exam, they are not competing with their fellow students on a comparative basis but are evaluated solely on their own performance on the exam.
