Providence Journal All-State Winners Announced

Six fall varsity athletes were recently named to the 2019 Providence Journal All-State Independent Team. Read about their fall-season accomplishments below.

 

 

Davy Appleton, Sr., Mattapoisett, Ma

Captain and All-league(EIL) 2019

Missed most of the season with an injury but came back strong to take third place in the EIL Championship (17:02 ) and second in the New England Prep School Division 3 Championship (15:46).

In 2018 was the EIL Champion, EIL MVP, and New England Division 3 Champion

A distance runner in Spring Track

 

Margot Appleton, Jr., Mattapoisett, Ma

Named the 2019-20 Gatorade Rhode Island girls cross country Runner of the Year, the first athlete from Portsmouth Abbey to earn Gatorade Player of the Year honors in any sport

EIL MVP 2019 

Won her 3rd consecutive EIL Championship(17:54) and 2nd consecutive New England Division 3 (16:36).

Placed 2nd in the Mayors Cup at Franklin Park ( 17:14) *3rd All-Time  Fastest time at Franklin Park by a female HS runner

Field Hockey

Izzy Zangari, Sr.,Forward, Tiverton, RI

Three-sport athlete in field hockey (Captain), squash, and track (Captain)

Led the 2019 team to a fourth-place finish in the EIL – Qualified for the EIL Post Season Tournament

Four-year varsity letter winner in field hockey

Captain and All-League (EIL) 2019, Honorable Mention All-League in 2018

Scored 15 goals and assisted on seven in 2019 and recorded 41 goals and 25 assists in her four-year varsity career.

Football

Daniel McKenna, Sr., Offensive / Defensive Tackle, Middletown, RI

Three-sport athlete in football (Captain) wrestling and baseball (Captain)

3-year letter winner in football on the offensive and defensive Line

Evergreen Football League All-League 2018*. 2019 All-Leagues are not yet published.

Top offensive lineman whose quickness and physical play were the strength of the Abbey Run game

As a defensive tackle, he recorded 35 Solo tackles including seven tackles for loss and four sacks

Girls Soccer

Makenzie Macomber, Sr., Striker, Warren, RI

Four-year varsity letter winner in soccer 

2019 captain and All-League(EIL), Scored 14 goals and had three assists, including two hat tricks vs Bancroft and St. Andrews

2018 selected to participate in the Junior NEPSAC All-Star Game

Volleyball

Nicole Huyer, Sr., Saunderstown, RI

Three-sport varsity captain in volleyball, basketball, and softball

As the only senior team member in 2019, Nicole led a young Raven team in their second year of varsity competition to 6-10 record and an eighth-place finish in NEPSAC Division 3 Volleyball

Skilled setter, server and hitter with the most touches on the team

Honorable Mention All-League 2018 and All-League in 2019

Selected to the NEPSAC Senior All-Star Game in 2019
