Red Cross Club Sponsors Holiday Food Drive Through November 29

The Portsmouth Abbey School Red Cross Club is a philanthropic group that organizes activities to benefit the Red Cross and other non-profit organizations. This month, the club is hosting a Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport.

Collection bins for non-perishable food items will be placed in each dorm for students to deposit donations through the evening of Tuesday, November 29. The dorm with the most donations will be given five points toward the Raven Cup. Those with the second and third highest donations will also receive points toward the coveted award.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center offers a number of hunger services to residents of Newport County, including its food pantry in Newport and a mobile pantry that rotates throughout the month to different neighborhoods. Each service provides quality food items and personal care items to households experiencing food insecurity.

The holidays are a joyful time, but for those who need help supplying food for their families, they can be quite stressful. The Red Cross Club Holiday Food Drive is designed to assist the MLK Center in meeting the needs of those who are struggling, through donations to its holiday meal pantries.
