Winter Wellness Week

This January, the Abbey celebrated its second annual Winter Wellness Week, an initiative of the Student Life office. Paula Walter, dean of student life, invited faculty and houseparents to promote wellness activities throughout the week including, starting class with a breathing exercise, allowing for stretching breaks, creating a gratitude wall, inviting students to call a loved one, making art, or engaging in prayer at unexpected times, such as during a workout or on the way to lunch.

Walter also emailed a new wellness challenge to the community each day. She introduced the 4-7-8 Breathing Method for clearing the mind and presented research on the importance of hydration, regular laughter and exercise, and participating in uplifting activities, such as hobbies. The Stillman Dining Hall staff provided additional health-conscious snacks throughout the week, including avocado toast. We look forward to this becoming a long-standing annual tradition and daily aspiration.
