Health and Safety Planning for Return to School for Spring Term 2021

Updated 3/8

As we continue to modify plans to protect our students, faculty, and staff during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the medical services staff is committed to the continuation of our protocols and procedures as we work together in mitigating risk for our community.  We are guided in our planning by the recommendations and mandates of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).  The key practices involved in the shared obligation to maintain our community’s safety include: mandatory mask wearing for students and employees, social distancing in classrooms and throughout campus, promotion of regular hand hygiene, enhanced cleaning procedures, daily symptom screenings, a robust testing plan for students, swift contact tracing, and implementation of isolation and quarantine when needed.

Currently, COVID vaccines are not available to the majority of our students due to age prioritization in the distribution protocols and pending clinical trial results for people under the age of 16.  The three vaccines with FDA emergency use authorization at this time are:  Pfizer (approved for ages 16 and older); Moderna (approved for ages 18 and over); and, Johnson & Johnson (approved for ages 18 and older). Parents will be notified when vaccine administration and distribution protocols allow for vaccination of our student population.  Portsmouth Abbey will work with the RIDOH to ensure students have the opportunity to be vaccinated as soon as guidelines allow.

Parents and students should feel free to contact Celia Brown, RN, Director of Medical Services, cbrown@portsmouthabbey.org, (401) 643-1233 at any time with questions or concerns that are not answered below. Parents of students who are medically vulnerable, have been diagnosed with chronic conditions, or auto-immune disorders should contact Mrs. Brown to discuss the specifics of their child’s individual needs.  Every effort will be made to provide appropriate accommodations for the increased health and safety requirements for these students.
