Abbey Strong Hiking Challenge
Portsmouth Abbey School is challenging its community to “hike” the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails this spring.
Your health and safety are our primary concern. We feel that is important that each of you gets some daily exercise, and we believe this initiative is a fun and collaborative way to encourage you to be active!
Given each of our unique situations, we want to make sure each member of our community is doing his or her part while practicing social distancing and taking care of his or herself. We hope each of you will participate!
How It Works:
The Abbey community will be broken up into five teams.
The goal is for each team to complete its assigned trail.
Team 1: III Form will hike the Appalachian Trail.
Team 2: IV Form will hike the Appalachian Trail.
Team 3: V Form will hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
Team 4: VI Form will hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
Team 5: Faculty/Staff will hike the Appalachian Trail.
On average, each Abbey student will “hike” 30 miles over the course of six weeks, averaging about five miles per week.
Goal: We hope to foster teamwork, friendly competition and connection among your class and within the larger Abbey community. We cannot wait to see which classes finish their “hike”! We are confident that if you work together with your class, you will be able to complete your hike of either the Appalachian or Pacific Crest Trails!
Ways to “Hike”:
If you are unable to get outside and hike, you can complete sets of Coach Brown’s Fitness Circuit: 1 set = 1 mile .
After completing a "hike," you will log your miles on a Google form that will be on our Abbey Strong Hiking Challenge page on our School’s website. We want to see you out on your hikes. Please feel free to share any photos from your hikes with Cam and Patrick, and we will share them with our community.
You should log your “miles” after each hike. At the end of each week, we will announce at assembly and post to our website an update on how each class is doing with their hiking challenge.
Challenge Begins: Thursday, April 9th
Challenge Ends: Friday, May 15th
For each class that completes its assigned trail, you will get recognition and an Abbey spirit t-shirt!
