Guitarist and composer Nick Moran '81 returned to campus for the third consecutive year to work with our Portsmouth Abbey jazz band. After working directly with students-musicians, breaking down rhythmic beats and discussing the importance of listening to great jazz musicians, the Nick Moran Trio staged a performance for the entire community in the evening.

New York native Nick Moran began studying trumpet at age ten, later switching to guitar. He holds a B.F.A. in Jazz Performance from the City College of New York, where he was a protégé student of the great Ron Carter, and has released two CDs to critical acclaim. Jazz Music writes: "His exceptional composing ability and fertile writer's imagination are reflected in a playing style that is transparent in its articulation, logical and devoid of trite cliches."

A bandleader and clinician, Moran holds master classes in rhythm studies, improvisation and contemporary styles. He fronts the Nick Moran Trio, a jazz and funk organ band, and is also active on seven-string guitar in the Carol Leven and Nick Moran Duo, which was a featured group at the 2016 Fort Greene Jazz Festival. He tours regionally and performs throughout the New York City area in venues such as the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Bahá'í Center, Louis 649 and the Bar Next Door at La Lanterna. Musicians he has played with include the Ray Santos Orchestra, trumpeter Shunzo Ohno, vocalists Daryl Sherman, Melissa Hamilton, guitarists Peter Bernstein, Sheryl Bailey, Adam Rafferty, bassists Tom Hubbard, Marco Panascia, and pianists Cliff Korman and Burt Eckoff.

Nick is also a recording engineer and producer. Notable projects include Coba's Cancion Mandala, the second CD by multi-instrumentalist and composer Sebastian Cruz on Chonta Records. Nick lives with his family in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Nick's upcoming tours, bio, and a sample of his music can be found on his website.
