Each year, the Rhode Island Art Education Association sponsors the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for high school students. Sofia Ponce '20 was awarded a Silver Key for her photography submission in this year's contest.
Because the contest takes place right at the start of January, students do not have as much time to create strong work. However, teacher Joney Swift describes how Sofia, with the help of her twin sister Marina, overcame that obstacle: "Even when there is a language misunderstanding they help each other to understand the assignments and the complicated process of black and white darkroom photography," Swift says. "Sofia really took to photography (as did her sister Marina) and has taken a number of rolls of B&W Ilford 35mm film with her 35 mm camera."
"Sofia's use of short depth of field helped the image stand out and the judges appreciated her artistic eye," Swift says about the winning piece. "There are many schools that send entries in the category of photography, but very few are in the analogue film format; most are simply digital captures. Sofia should be very proud of her outstanding accomplishment and she is certainly deserving."
