Former Portsmouth Abbey history teacher and noted local historian Fred Zilian will present a lecture entitled "Anne Hutchinson: Founding Mother of Religious Freedom in America." Zillian taught at Portsmouth Abbey for 23 years before retiring in 2015.
Also participating in the lecture is current Abbey teacher, and Zilian's former student, Ann Gallagher '13. Gallagher will speak the words of Anne Hutchinson during the lecture.
More than just one of the founders of Portsmouth, Anne Hutchinson was likely the first British-American female defendant in the New World. Because of her strong devotion to her religious beliefs, she endured first a trial by the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony, which ended in her banishment and then a church trial which ended in her excommunication. The lecture, given by the Portsmouth Historical Society, will take place on Tuesday, July 17, at 5:30 p.m in the upstairs meeting room of the Portsmouth Historical Society Museum.
