A Century of Prayer, Study and Community

In 1918, Dom Leonard Sargent placed a medal of St. Benedict into a field overlooking Narragansett Bay and chose to remain. From that quiet beginning grew Portsmouth Abbey—a monastery and school rooted in a 1,500-year Benedictine tradition of prayer, study, and community. Founded in 1926 and evolving through the decades, the Abbey continues to form students in both mind and spirit.
