Portsmouth Abbey’s athletic venues include an 18-hole championship golf course at The Aquidneck Club designed by British Course Architect Donald Steel, a newly refurbished track, regionally known hockey rink, comprehensive strength and conditioning center and exclusive sailing access at Bristol Yacht Club -- all within the natural landscapes of Rhode Island’s classic coast

Athletics Complex

Our Athletics Complex lies at the center of campus, as it plays host to many activities throughout the year. Sports practices and, naturally, competitions take place here regularly, but many other memorable events take place here too, such as game nights, concerts and more.

Upper Gymnasium

The Upper Gymnasium has a regulation basketball court and two practice cross courts, adorned with classic wood flooring and lit by natural light coming in through glass walls.

Lower Gymnasium

Downstairs, our lower gymnasium hosts our wrestling Ravens, JV basketball and volleyball teams and provides a versatile space for indoor sports practices, including soccer and lacrosse. The multipurpose surface accommodates a wide range of activities.

Dance Studio

Our Dance Studio provides a dedicated space for student dancers to explore movement, rhythm and expression in a supportive training environment.

Training Room

The Training Room is equipped with the latest resources to help support our athletes’ physical development and recovery needs. Paying close attention to athletes’ individual training needs goes a great length toward ensuring peak performance and technique improvement.

Team Locker Rooms

Basketball, wrestling and volleyball – and other sports, from time to time – enjoy on-site locker rooms that offer private, comfortable space for athletes to prepare for games and unwind after intense competitions. Equipped with all the necessary amenities, they are places of camaraderie and team spirit.

Bristol Yacht Club

Our sailing Ravens and their fleet of twelve 420s launch from the historic Bristol Yacht Club on Narragansett Bay, just a few miles from campus. Founded in 1899, the Bristol Yacht Club features a dock with good water depth and excellent holding. Managed by the town of Bristol, it also operates two Coast Guard-inspected launches from May through October.

Carlos X. Araujo ’96 Memorial Track

Honoring the legacy of Carlos X. Araujo '96, Portsmouth Abbey School’s outdoor track encompasses a meticulously maintained 400-meter all-weather surface. Designed to accommodate various track and field events, including long jump, javelin, pole vault and high jump, it serves as a premier venue for training sessions and competitions. Our campus also includes cross-country trails that meander through the landscape, offering runners a scenic and invigorating experience amid our sprawling campus.

Equestrian Center

The Equestrian Center, at the Narragansett Bay Club, offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in horse riding and equestrian care. This modern facility, overseen by certified instructors, boasts a range of amenities including grass turnout paddocks, an outdoor jumping course and a year-round indoor riding ring. Whether learning the basics or honing advanced skills, students can experience the joys of equestrianism in a safe and professional environment.

Healey and Sheehan Squash and Fitness Center

The Healey and Sheehan Fitness Center is a 17,000-square-foot facility designed to promote health and wellness. A newly renovated strength and conditioning area features a mirrored wall, free weights, squat racks, turf area, circuit machines and cardio equipment, all complemented by surround sound for an upbeat workout.

Three exterior glass walls provide sweeping views of the playing fields and the bay, infusing each workout session with inspiration. Adjacent to the fitness area is the Squash Center, which houses seven international squash courts and a versatile combination court for squash and racquetball enthusiasts.

Amidst these active pursuits, the facility also provides inviting spaces for socializing and relaxation, ensuring a well-rounded experience for all who visit.

Hockey Rink

The Abbey rink holds the coveted honor of being the coldest arena in Rhode Island, an environment that guarantees impeccably smooth ice and lightning-fast gameplay. Here, the Ravens proudly hit the ice, rallying to cheers of their fellow students under the banner “O Ye Ice and Snow.”

The Hockey Rink is also an important venue to many non-hockey school and community events throughout the season.

Playing Fields

Our 525-acre campus on the shores of Narragansett Bay caters to a diverse range of athletic activities. From soccer and lacrosse to volleyball, softball, baseball, football and track and field, our fields provide the perfect backdrop for both competitive matches and recreation for its own sake.

St. Hilda’s Field

St. Hilda’s Turf Field is used for field hockey, lacrosse, and soccer competitions, and is 90 yards wide and rests on the shore of the Narragansett Bay.

Baseball and Softball Diamonds

Baseball and softball players benefit from our meticulously maintained fields, just off the path on our lower campus.

Football Field

Our natural grass football field on the north end of campus is enveloped comfortably by a six-lane all-weather 400-meter track. The hillside to the south offers spectators commanding views of both venues along with spectacular vistas of the New England foliage that abounds in the distance.

Tennis Courts

Our six recently renovated and resurfaced tennis courts are graced by the refreshing sea breeze from Narragansett Bay. These courts are in use during both fall and spring seasons, allowing players and spectators alike to bask in the delightfully mild weather. It's here that our tennis teams work on their mechanics and compete. Situated conveniently near Manor House, it’s the perfect spot to keep an eye out for the occasional Del's lemonade trucks, adding a touch of beloved local charm to game days.

The Aquidneck Club

The home club of Ravens Golf, The Aquidneck Club, is an impressive Scottish-links style course offering a memorable blend of natural beauty and challenging play. With water views gracing eight holes, the course's signature moments unfold on the dramatic Par 3 17th and Par 4 18th Holes, which hug the shores of Narragansett Bay, leaving a lasting impression on both new and seasoned players.

Crafted by renowned British Course Architect Donald Steel, the 18-hole routing of this timeless course takes full advantage of the rich heritage and historic terrain of the property.
