Stanley Dunbar, Jr. officially began his tenure with Portsmouth Abbey School on July 1, but like any raven, he has been hard at work planning and readying his team for action come September. As the new head football coach he has a few challenges to address, including scheduling, getting to know his players, drawing plays and balancing his other responsibilities as an assistant director of admission, houseparent and father of two young children, one a newborn.

A Rhode Island native, Dunbar’s experience and deep ties to the state made him an attractive choice as a coach. Being a man of faith who desires to use football to help young men improve themselves both mentally and physically, is a natural fit for the School's mission of helping students grow in knowledge and grace.

He attended St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket where as a quarterback, he led the Saints to a perfect 13-0 record and a division 1 State Championship during his senior season. He earned First Team All-State honors from the Providence Journal and was named Rhode Island Gridiron Player and Back of the Year by the Providence Gridiron Club.

Dunbar attended Dean College, where he was an All-Conference defensive back who helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back conference championships. He then earned a scholarship to the University of Rhode Island, where he was a two-year starter at cornerback.

His coaching journey began at Portsmouth High School and includes positions at American International College, Dean College, Coventry High School, Westerly High School, and Suffield Academy.

Dunbar is the founder and director of Breakthrough Elite Football, New England's largest amateur football organization. In the offseason, Breakthrough Elite Football hosts camps, clinics, leagues, and showcases for football players.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Coach Dunbar and his family to the Abbey community,” said Director of Athletics Chris Milmoe. We are ready to usher in the next era of Portsmouth Abbey football and are thrilled to have him join us.”
