In a thrilling display of grit and determination, Portsmouth Abbey School’s girls varsity soccer team delivered a statement win on Saturday afternoon, October 4, defeating last year’s NEPSAC champions, Pomfret School, by a score of 1-0.
The match was a hard-fought battle from the opening whistle, with both teams showcasing disciplined defensive play and moments of technical brilliance. But it was a brilliant sister act in the second half that proved to be the difference.
Midfielder Jenny Rivera, senior, made a driving run down the left flank in the 68th minute, beating her defender and delivering a cross into the box. Her twin sister, forward Jessy Rivera, timed her run to perfection and calmly slotted the ball past the Pomfret goalkeeper to give Portsmouth Abbey the lead.
The goal ignited the home crowd and gave the Ravens the momentum they needed to fend off a relentless Pomfret attack for the remainder of the game.
Anchoring the back line was goalkeeper Clara Corbin, senior, who turned in a standout performance. Corbin made several key saves, including a diving stop in the 72nd minute to preserve the clean sheet. Her leadership and composure under pressure were vital in shutting down a Pomfret offense known for its firepower.
“This was a total team effort,” said Portsmouth Abbey Head Coach Steve Zins. “The Rivera sisters showed great chemistry on the goal, and Clara Corbin was absolutely outstanding leading our defense. We knew Pomfret was a tough opponent, but our players rose to the occasion.
With the win, Portsmouth Abbey positioned themselves as a serious contender in the NEPSAC landscape this season. For a team that has been building steadily over the past few years, Saturday’s win marks a defining moment.
