There are many partners, groups, and programming that collectively support and enhance the Portsmouth Abbey experience for the many branches of our community.
Portsmouth Institute |
The Portsmouth Institute for Faith and Culture offers enriching experiences for students, educators and lifelong learners alike. With campuses nestled at Portsmouth Abbey in Rhode Island and Saint Louis Abbey in Missouri, as well as engagements in Oxford (UK) and across the United States, the Institute extends its reach far and wide, inviting participants to engage with the richness of Catholic thought and culture.
At Portsmouth Abbey School, the Institute plays a pivotal role in fostering spiritual growth and communal fellowship within the broader context of Catholic education. Through its programs, publications and virtual events, the Institute serves as a source of enlightenment and inspiration, drawing upon the Benedictine ethos of receptivity, leisure and love to cultivate among our students a deeper understanding of God, His truth and the beauty of His creation.

dining services |
Mealtimes are about connecting as a community. That’s why we disconnect.
Food, friendship and fun should be the focus during mealtimes. This is why we don’t permit cell phone use in the Stillman Dining Hall or wear hats. You cannot connect during a busy day when hiding behind headgear or with a phone glued to your ear.
Finding your favorite foods on campus is easy. The School partners with Sodexo Dining Services to offer a menu featuring a wide variety of fresh foods for everyone’s appetite including fresh fruit, yogurt and made-to-order omelets for breakfast; delicious hot entrees, paninis and a salad bar for lunch and dinner; house-made soups, freshly baked deserts, fresh milk from local farms free of artificial growth hormones, and much more. Sunday brunch after church is a favorite among students and faculty alike. Beverages include juice, milk, iced tea, coffee and select electrolyte drinks to fuel up before or after a game. There are always options for gluten-free and/or lactose-free students at each meal.
A formal, sit-down dinner is offered twice per term during the school year. In keeping with tradition, these special dinners are designed to foster connections between people who may not naturally interact. Students get to know faculty outside of the classroom and speak with peers they may only see in passing. Dinners are served family style, and the dining hall is filled with music, offering an opportunity to for students to build confidence in navigating shared meals, learn more about each other and understand the value of breaking bread together.
Birthdays are meant to be celebrated. Birthday Cakes may be ordered through dining services for delivery to students.

medical services |
Located in the Nesbitt Infirmary, Portsmouth Abbey’s medical services unit is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week by Registered Nurses. From dispensing prescribed medication to treating acute illness and injury, we ensure every student receives excellent attention and care.
The School’s physician is on call for emergencies seven days per week and sees boarding students during scheduled clinic hours. Referrals to specialists and routine medical and dental appointments for boarding students are conveniently coordinated by the staff. Students requiring evaluation for emergencies are transported to Newport Hospital, just eight miles down the road in Newport, Rhode Island.
The responsibilities of high school can be a lot to manage sometimes, but that’s how students grow. To help support them, our school psychologists are available for counseling several days per week. Any student can make an appointment for themself, or be referred by a parent, houseparent, advisor or other faculty member.
