Portsmouth Abbey Monastery to ordain new Deacon in May

From India’s Bay of Bengal to Narragansett Bay, Brother Benedict Maria, O.S.B. has brought joy to Portsmouth Abbey and School. On Friday, May 3, at the 8:30 a.m. School Mass in the Abbey Church, Benedict will be ordained, deo volente (or, ‘God-willing’), to the Sacred Order of Deacons by the Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, Bishop of Providence. Bishop Henning will be assisted by Abbot Michael Brunner of Portsmouth Abbey and Abbot Gregory Mohrman of St. Louis Abbey.

Benedict began his novitiate at St. Louis Abbey and continued at Portsmouth Abbey where he made his Solemn Profession in November of 2021. He studied philosophy at Holy Apostles College & Seminary and is currently taking his theology courses at the St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Palm Beach County, Florida. The diaconate is the final step to priestly ordination after one more year of studies.

Following the Mass, a reception will be held in his honor and to welcome his parents and sister traveling from India for the occasion, as well as to extend our traditional Benedictine hospitality to the many other guests traveling to Aquidneck Island.
