Volleyball - Varsity
The Portsmouth Abbey Volleyball team began as a club team in the 2017-18 season. Due to the overwhelming popularity and level of skill in our players, it allowed us to take the sport to the Varsity level the very next year for the 2018-2019 season. The program has found great success by focusing on team-building, having fun competitions, and providing a challenging and educational experience both on and off the court. We coaches expect that the team strives to reach their very best academically, socially, and athletically.
Fall 2019 Volleyball experienced its second season as a Varsity team, and we immediately realized our team's evident potential. This past August, pre-season revealed that those who wanted to get better, got better fast. The girls’ commitment to the sport and to the team carried over to the actual season, where the rest of the team felt that spirit, too. Led by Captains Nicole Huyer and Julia Sisk for Varsity, and Sarah Dugal and Ella Howlett for Junior Varsity, both teams went far beyond our expectations to win six Varsity and five Junior Varsity games—and nearly winning a few more when we lost by only a point or two in many sets.
At the close of the season, the Varsity team ended up just one win away from the New England tournament! Furthermore, out of the sixteen teams in our class, Portsmouth Abbey Volleyball won the Sportsmanship Award (!), which speaks to the grace, class, and poise of our girls.
We will miss our former captain, graduate Nicole Huyer ’20, as she attends Catholic University. New to the game of volleyball three years ago, Nicole excelled in our program earning a number of accolades: All- Eastern Independent League, All-State, and she was invited to the New England All-Star game. Our dedicated and talented captains for this year are seniors Leah Eid, Julia Sisk, Tibi Zabasajja.
Portsmouth Abbey Volleyball is proud to be a member of the Eastern Independent League (EIL). EIL member schools include Bancroft School, Beaver Country Day, Berwick Academy, Concord Academy, Dana Hall School, Landmark School, Lexington Christian, Newton Country Day, Pingree School, and the Winsor School.
